A press conference was held today, 4 April 2017, at the offices of the Organisation Pafos2017, on the occasion of the issue of a commemorative stamp series for the European Capital of Culture Pafos2017.

A commemorative series of 3 stamps for the European Capital of Culture Pafos2017 was issued on 24 March, in the framework of the institutional cooperation between the Organisation Pafos2017 and the Cyprus Post. The three denominations of the series (€0.64 x 3 = 1.92), printed jointly in a triptych, portray antiquity and the monuments of civilisation, the sea and the natural environment. The series was designed by Nikos Ierodiakonou from Nicosia and printed in Athens by VERIDOS-MATSOUKIS, in sheets of four triptychs, using the multicolour offset printing technique. A total of 64,000 series were printed.

The Chairman of the Organisation, Dr. Christos Patsalides, expressed his sincere thanks to the Cyprus Post for their positive response to the proposal of Pafos2017, made back in 2015, to issue stamps commemorating the European Capital of Culture Pafos2017. He also pointed out that the Cyprus Post was amongst the first public organisations to respond to a call for cooperation with Pafos2017.

He specifically stated the following: “It would be inconceivable for an institution of such magnitude, hosted in Cyprus for the first time, not to have its own series of stamps, to convey across the world the message that Pafos is the European Capital of Culture for 2017.”

The Director of the Cyprus Post, Mr. Andreas Gregoriou, stated: “The Cyprus Post could not be absent from this institution. It is with great pleasure that we have accepted the proposal of the Organisation Pafos2017 to issue a series of stamps and contribute, in this way, towards enriching and promoting this great institution since, as we know, stamps are amongst a country’s most important ambassadors.”

The purpose of the issue is to pay tribute to the greatest European cultural institution, while promoting Pafos and the entire island of Cyprus across the world.

Mushrooms of Kyrgyzstan

http://up.picr.de/28847294tf.jpg

The nature of Kyrgyzstan is characterized by its huge diversity. In our mountainous country one can encounter members of the animal and plant world, which are characteristic of many different climatic zones.

The new issue of KEP postage stamps is dedicated to the wonderful world of mushrooms - special organisms that combine features of both plants and animals.

In general, about 2,100 species of mushrooms are known in our country, of which 98 species are edible. Edible fungi are used by the population as a valuable food source. Not only do they have excellent taste qualities, but they are also the source of a large variety of minerals, amino acids and vitamins, so necessary for the good health of the human body.

The four KEP postage stamps represent some of the species of edible mushrooms that are quite common in Kyrgyzstan:

- Rough-stemmed bolete or scaber stalk (lat. Leccinum scabrum);

- Oyster mushroom (lat. Pleurotus ostreatus);

- Black morel (lat. Morchella conica);

- Boletus of the steppes (lat. Pleurotus eryngii).

It should be emphasized that mushrooms, including edible ones, are a very important element of the ecological system and therefore need constant protection. Immoderate, sometimes savage picking of mushrooms, such as morels, can lead to a sharp reduction in their natural reserves, which will negatively affect the ecological balance as a whole.

We would like to express our hope that the new KEP stamps will contribute to the spread of knowledge about mushrooms, and also help in protecting these remarkable representatives of the nature of Kyrgyzstan.

This issue was carried out with the support of the Institute of Biology and Soil Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic. We would like to express our special gratitude to Ms. Mosolova S.N., head of the Laboratory of Mycology and Phytopathology, for the advisory assistance.

Sally Ride, 1st American Woman in Space, to Appear on 2018 US Postage Stamp

http://up.picr.de/31474627bb.png

America's first woman in space will become only the second NASA astronaut to be honored on a U.S. postage stamp in 2018.

Sally Ride, who made history launching aboard the space shuttle Challenger in June 1983, will be depicted on a U.S. Postal Service (USPS) stamp. A preliminary design for the commemorative shows a painted portrait of Ride from the time of her first spaceflight set against the partial backdrop of the space shuttle lifting off.

"Sally Ride inspired the nation as a pioneering astronaut, brilliant physicist and dedicated educator," the USPS said in a press release previewing more than 20 of its planned stamps on Tuesday (Dec. 12). The USPS did not state the dates next year when the stamps would be issued. [Sally Ride: First American Woman in Space (Pictures)]

Another of the 2018 stamps employs the outline of NASA's Apollo spacecraft in a collage symbolizing "Engineering" in a four-stamp set dedicated to STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education — a cause Ride championed in her years following her two space missions and leaving NASA.

"As a young girl, Sally collected stamps. She would be so honored to now appear on a stamp!" Tam O'Shaughnessy, Ride's life partner, said in a statement issued by Sally Ride Science, a non-profit Ride and O'Shaughnessy co-founded to promote learning and careers in STEM.

"It was a great pleasure working with the Postal Service on the Sally Ride commemorative stamp," she added.

The Sally Ride stamp's release comes five years after her death in 2012. Criteria set by the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee, the group that recommends stamp subjects to the USPS, precludes living individuals from being honored on U.S. postage stamps.......

KUALA LUMPUR: Pos Malaysia will issue the latest stamps series featuring the three longest rivers in Malaysia.

Its Stamp and Philately Unit head, Diyana Lean Abdullah said they were the Sungai Rajang in Sarawak, Sungai Kinabatangan (Sabah) and Sungai Pahang (Pahang).

She said of the three rivers debuted on the stamp series, Sungai Rajang – the longest river in the country measuring at 563km – was chosen to be the longest miniature sheet ever produced by Pos Malaysia.

“There are only 200,000 pieces for each design, 28,000 pieces of First Day cover, 25,000 pieces of Miniature Sheet and 2,000 pieces of folder,” she told a press conference yesterday.

Diyana said the stamps would be available at post offices nationwide, beginning Feb 27.

“In this series, the stamps will feature the illustration of top-down views of the second and third longest rivers in Malaysia, which are the Kinabatangan River (560km) and Pahang River (459km). Both are worth 80 sen and 60 sen, respectively.

“The longest of the three, Rajang River will make its apperance on the Miniature Sheet which will also be the longest Miniature Sheet that we have ever issued,” she noted.

Other philatelic products such as the first-day cover with a free brochure are available at 55 sen each while the complete stamp series can be obtained at RM40.70 each.

Meanwhile, a United Kingdom collector, Mike Kingslang, 73, said he started collecting stamps since 1973 and had a collection of stamps since Malaysia’s independence in 1957.

“I come to Malaysia once a year, and it is a must for me to come and purchase the stamps produced. I am very impressed with the design produced,” he said. — Bernama

Vatican releases postage stamps on Reformation, St. Francis of Sales
The Vatican Philatelic Office released postage stamps on 500 years of Protestant Reformation and 450th anniversary of the birth of Saint Francis de Sales.

The Vatican on Thursday released two new postage stamps for sale to commemorate the 500 years of the Protestant Reformation in October, and the 450th anniversary of the birth of Saint Francis de Sales, in August.

Reformation

The Vatican Philatelic Office that released the stamps explained that the €1 stamp on the 5th centenary of the Reformation, marked on October 31, 2017, “depicts in the foreground Jesus crucified and in the background a golden and timeless view of the city of Wittenberg,‎” where on the church door Martin Luther put up his 95 theses on October 31, 1517, marking the start of the Reformation.

In the stamp, Martin Luther is depicted on the left side of the Cross, kneeling in “a penitential disposition” and holding “the Bible, source and destination of his doctrine”.  On the other side is “Philipp Melanchthon, theologian and friend of Martin Luther, one of the main protagonists of the reform,” who is holding the “’Augsburg Confession’ (Confessio Augustana), the first official public presentation of the principles of Protestantism written by him.‎”

Division

The 16th Protestant Reformation triggered the second major split within Christianity, ‎after the Great Schism of ‏‎1054 ‎that split the followers of Christ into Eastern Orthodoxy and Western Catholicism.  But after Vatican Council II, the Church has taken up the cause of unity among Christians as a prime mission.  Since his election in 2013, Pope Francis has been involved in fresh efforts in this regard.

Pope Francis and Protestant Reformation

Last year, he travelled to Sweden on October 31 to join Lutheran leaders for a common commemoration of the Protestant Reformation in the Lutheran Cathedral of Lund, kicking off a yearlong celebration that concluded on Oct. 31, 2017.  Part of that commemoration included Lutherans and Catholics signing a joint statement pledging to pursue their dialogue in order to remove the remainding obstacles that hinder them from reaching full unity.  They also stressed their commitment to common witness on behalf of the poor, the needy and the victims of injustice.

Francis of Sales

The other postage stamp of €2.55 celebrates the birth of St. Francis of Sales on August 21, 1567 in the French border town of Haute-Savoieon,.  The portrait of the Bishop of Geneva in stained glass window style is depicted with a pen in his hand, as he regarded the patron of writers and journalists. The Philatelic Office said the saint  “lived his ministry with a strong will to save the Church of Rome from the Calvinist Reformation” in the 17th century.  “It is for the love of God that he brought back to communion with the Catholic Church many of the faithful who had separated themselves from it.”

120,000 copies have been printed of each stamp. The Vatican’s Philatelic and Numismatic Office (UFN) is responsible for issuing Vatican postal stamps and Euro coins.  The office was established in 1929, issuing its first stamps that year featuring the image of Pope Pius XI.
