Stamps mark centenary of the naval Battle of Jutland

http://up.picr.de/24615836hq.png

A special stamp sheet featuring two new stamps has been created to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Jutland.

Produced by Isle of Man Post Office, the stamp sheet is divided into two parts and showcases the key figures in the First World War naval battle.

The first half features William Wyillie’s painting of HMS Iron Duke opening fire along with portraits of Commander of the British Royal Navy Grand Fleet Admiral Sir John Jellicoe and Admiral Scheer, commander of the German Navy’s High Fleet.

The other side shows William Stower’s painting of a German torpedo boat with portraits of Vice Admiral Sir David Beatty and Vice Admiral Franz Hipper.

The Battle of Jutland was fought between May 31 and June 1, 1916 and was the only encounter between the main British and German fleets during the First World War.

It lasted less than 12 hours and 249 ships and 100,000 men fought in the battle off the coast of Denmark’s Jutland peninsula.

Nick Jellicoe, grandson of Sir John Jellicoe who was Commander of the Grand Fleet for two and a half years between 1914 and 1916, produced the historical text that accompanies the sheet and his daughter Francesca Jellicoe helped design the stamps.

Nick said: ‘It is a fitting tribute to the men of both the Royal Navy and the German High Seas Fleet to have such a fine commemorative miniature stamp sheet issued in their memory.’

The stamp sheet will be available to order on February 17. To view and pre-order the stamps visit wwwiompost.com

New stamps pay tribute to Einstein, Hawking and the centenary of the General Theory of Relativity

Six stamps commemorating 100 years of Professor Albert Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity have been released by The Isle of Man Post Office.

One stamp features Einstein while another features Stephen Hawking. The other stamps feature well-known equations produced by the physicists over the past century, that have helped shape scientific discoveries today.

The series has been produced to celebrate both the pioneering physicists and their contribution to the world of science.

The stamps have been personally endorsed and approved by theoretical physicist Professor Hawking and are receiving support from The Stephen Hawking Foundation.

They have also received the royal seal of approval, having been approved by HM Queen Elizabeth II.

Hawking said: “I am honoured to have both my face and my life’s work featured alongside Albert Einstein and the commemoration of 100 years since the publication of his general theory of relativity.

“Much of my life’s work has been to encourage young people in the study of cosmology and astrophysics and to help inspire them to better understand our universe and beyond. I hope that this unique set of stamps goes some way towards achieving this.”

Einstein's General Theory of Relativity continues to shape the scientific community, with Professor Hawking as the leading voice and driving force for continued research and discoveries.

Allan Bell, Isle of Man Chief Minster, said: “Professor Albert Einstein and Professor Stephen Hawking have made outstanding contributions to the world’s understanding of the universe around us.

“Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity may be a century old, but it is fundamental today to the operation of such features of our daily lives as GPS and satellites.

“In addition to Professor Hawking’s ground-breaking research his ability to make science exciting to the general population deserves to be celebrated as well, as these stamps do.”

The stamps are available from Isle of Man Post Office’s website.

Ancient Britain - stamp issue 17 January 2017
Royal Mail starts its 2017 Stamp Programme with a subject that has not previously been featured as a stand-alone topic: how people lived in prehistoric times has always been a fascination for many and the Ancient Britain stamp issue explores this subject in some detail.

The stamps show famous iconic sites and some of the most exceptional artefacts found across the UK, and overlays illustrations to show how people lived, worked and used the objects. We also explore the social and technological evolution of these early Britons.

The first metals were used in Britain while still in the ‘Stone Age’. The arrival of cultures that could ‘make metal’ would have a dramatic effect on society. In the British Isles the first seams of copper were exploited in Ireland around 2500BC. The discovery of tin in South West England helped to make Britain an important centre – copper smelted with an amount of tin makes the superior metal bronze: harder, more durable and versatile and the so-called Bronze Age saw several other technological advancements.  Overall, the stamps give a timeline across thousands of years of history, from a glimpse of Stone Age ritual of 11,000 years ago, through the Bronze Age and into the Iron Age of some 300 BC.

Windsor Castle - 15 February 2017

Founded by William the Conqueror in around 1080, Windsor Castle is the oldest inhabited castle in the world, and The Queen’s home. Our photographic celebration explores iconic views and some of the sumptuous interiors. 2017 also marks the 25th anniversary of the devastating fire, which was the spur to the extraordinary rebuilding and refurbishment that almost 1m visitors a year enjoy. The fire at Windsor broke out in the morning of 20 November 1992 and was finally extinguished fifteen hours later.

One hundred and fifteen rooms were destroyed or very badly damaged by the fire and over a million gallons of water were pumped into the fabric of the building. The process of clearing, drying out, rebuilding and redecorating the damaged structure was completed exactly five years later.

A miniature sheet of an additional four stamps explores St George’s Chapel, the spiritual home of the Order of the Garter, Britain’s senior Order of Chivalry founded by Edward III. Building began within the Castle in 1475 and Henry VII completed the nave and extraordinary stone vaulted ceiling. Finally Henry VIII completed building work by 1528. The architecture is renowned as among the finest examples of Gothic in the UK – the late medieval style of English architecture.

Music Giants II: David Bowie - 14 March 2017

Royal Mail have announced that this year's Music Giants stamp issue will be a tribute to David Bowie, who died last year aged 69; he was one of the most influential music and cultural figures of all time.

Bowie made his commercial breakthrough with the 1969 album “Space Oddity” with its single of the same title. In 1972 he recorded The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, featuring the hit “Starman”, and toured to promote the album with an elaborate stage act as his alter ego Ziggy Stardust. This established him as a leader of glam-rock in the mid-1970s.

His 1975 album Young Americans began his “plastic soul” period, and in the 1980s he established a more elegant rock presence with hits like “Under Pressure” (with the band Queen) and “Let’s Dance” (from his 1983 album of the same name). Bowie also had hit records in collaboration with, Lou Reed, John Lennon, Mick Jagger, Iggy Pop, Mott the Hoople and Brian Eno.

He also acted in films, notably in The Man Who Fell To Earth (1976), The Hunger (1983), Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983), Labyrinth (1986) and The Prestige (2006). He also took the title role in The Elephant Man in an American stage production (1980-81).

Racehorse Legends - stamp issue 6 April 2017
The sport of Horseracing is thought to have been brought to Britain in the first century AD during the Roman occupation when soldiers used to organise races on horseback as a means of entertainment. Kings and queens were amongst those who enthused about horse racing including Charles I who introduced the first-ever Cup Race, known as the Gold
Cup, and also Queen Anne whose passion for the sport led to the founding of Ascot Racecourse. Traditionally, horses were ridden over a specific distance on flat ground only but during the 18th century the racing of horses involving the jumping of fences and hurdles was introduced, an activity that was to become known in the UK as National Hunt.

The eight stamps that comprise the set feature horses which have all in their own unique way created a piece of history in British horse racing. These include the legendary Red Rum who won the Grand National on three occasions and the indomitable Frankel who remained unbeaten in his 14-race career. Whilst not all of the horses featured were born and reared in Britain, such is the global nature of the modern ‘Sport of Kings’, they have all achieved greatness by winning one or more of the UK’s most prestigious races.

Fashion designers among those depicted on six new stamps from Isle of Man

http://up.picr.de/31571811te.png

http://up.picr.de/31571813xo.jpg

An upcoming set of six stamps from the Isle of Man Post Office highlights the work of two Manx-born fashion designers, Justin Thornton and Thea Bregazzi.

They founded the fashion house Preen by Thornton Bregazzi in 1996. In the more than two decades since then, it “has evolved from a small boutique in London’s Notting Hill to a globally loved brand stocked across 5 continents and an industry insider,” according to the company’s website.

The main part of each design depicts a model in a box wearing a Preen by Thornton Bregazzi dress.

Two of these dresses were made famous by the women who wore them.

The Isle of Man Post Office describes the nondenominated first-class stamp as featuring “the red Finella dress that was famously worn by the Duchess of Cambridge [Kate Middleton].”

According to a report by Caroline Leaper in the Telegraph newspaper, after first wearing the dress in September 2016, the duchess liked it so much that she also purchased it in black.

The stamp inscribed “EU” for the rate to European countries shows a citrus yellow power dress that was worn both by singer Amy Winehouse (1983-2001) and actress Gwyneth Paltrow.

One other stamp in the set is nondenominated. The initials “ROW” in the lower left of the design stand for “rest of the world.” The set is completed by £1, £1.57 and £1.86 denominations.

The Isle of Man Post Office said of the designs: “The images for these stamps were commissioned exclusively for this collection. The model is situated in a box to give the impression that she is inside the stamp. The pictures were shot with a soft focus so that the final images appear almost feel painted. The choice of a red haired model was inspired by Thea’s Bregazzi’s trademark hair. “

Cartor printed the stamps by offset in sheets of 12. They are scheduled to be issued Feb.

Several stamps use war memorials to honor WWI anniversary

https://up.picr.de/34207765pz.png

Gibraltar, Guernsey and the Isle of Man recently issued stamps depicting war memorials to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.

As reported in the Nov. 5 Linn’s, page 13, many other postal administrations also are issuing stamps to mark the 100th anniversary of the armistice that ended the war.

Gibraltar’s WWI series began Feb. 19, 2014 (Scott 1436-1441) and ended with two souvenir sheets issued Sept. 21.

One of these stamps contains a single £3 stamp featuring the Gibraltar War Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum in Lichfield, Staffordshire, England. Carved out of a 3.5-ton piece of limestone it is “dedicated to the Gibraltarians who paid the ultimate price and whose names are carved in stone on this memorial,” according to Gibraltar’s philatelic bureau.

The monument was designed by Anselmo Torres, who also has designed stamps for Gibraltar.

The other souvenir sheet from Gibraltar includes four se-tenant (side-by-side) stamps with a continuous design in black-and-white of soldiers in WWI.

Guernsey is completing its five-year WWI series Nov. 8 with a set of six stamps showing details from memorials honoring islanders who died in the war.

First class stamps to rise 6p to 76p

https://up.picr.de/38046343bp.jpg

The Royal Mail is increasing the cost of postage, with first-class stamps rising 6p to 76p and second-class up 4p to 65p.

Prices will climb from 23 March, less than a year after they were hiked to their current levels.

The 65p second-class stamp is the maximum under an Ofcom price cap.

"These changes are necessary to help ensure the sustainability of the one-price-goes-anywhere Universal Service," Royal Mail said.

It blamed the increases on "a challenging business environment".
Tough market

Stephen Agar, managing director of letters at Royal Mail said: "We are operating in a tough market at present, under the threat of making a loss by 2021. These price increases will help us maintain the quality of service that is expected by our customers,"

The likelihood has increased that Royal Mail in the UK will be loss-making in 2020-21, the company said in a statement, adding: "We want to invest £1.8bn in the UK to turnaround, grow and sustain the Universal Service."
